First off, please introduce yourself and your band.
PATRIK> My name is Patrik Mata. I am the sole founder/owner/main composer/voice/multi-instrumentalist/shapeshifter for KOMMUNITY FK.
Where did the name of your band come from?
PATRIK> This saga has been spoken ov many, many fathoms ov Times but in short, when I founded Kommunity Fk back in 1978 there were NO bands as such. This was before Christian Death & all the rest. The only other band out in Hollywood but who were yet quite more heavy metal-ish as such were 45 Grave who came before us. I used to be an acquaintance of the original line up & was at their debut performance at The Starwood. We were & are still 2 different kinds ov beasts with 2 diffeent kind ov heads. As punk rock from the OG standpoint had become stagnant as it has to this precise moment, I had other visions ov what I wanted to express in my own musikal concept. No bookers would have us as we were not “punk” to them. We were the New Breed therefore found it very difficult to perform live as there were no Deathrock klubs…Yet. A lot ov the so-called ‘Hollywood community’ were spreading rumors & lies that they made up about us like we were rich kids buying our way into the LA Times who were becoming hip to us & our New Breed printing feature articles about Kommunity FK & that we were buying our way into a few huge shows like when we were asked by the Whiskey A-Go-Go talent booker to perform second billing to a band called KILLING JOKE at what was their debut Hollywood performance. Ever. This was 1981. Jealousy reigned upon us throughout Hollywood so we became somewhat ‘blacklisted’ from getting any klub bookings in Hollywood. We became the ‘community fuck’ scapegoat for the gossipers & poseurs ov that Time in Hollywood. So, I called us “Kommunity Fuck” right out. I had designed a collage depicting a Roman orgy as a piece ov anti-art & when we were requested to sign to Independent Records to record our debut lp on vinyl I used this anti-art piece as the cover illustrating the band name in a rather ‘pun-like’ fashion. This lp is now considered a classik & it’s entitled “THE VISION & THE VOICE”. It consisted ov what our then live set list we performed live. It was also recorded live in the studio as well with very minimal overdubs. The rest is now Deathrock history. For more in detail regarding my band history you can do your research throughout our official website, kommunityfk.com/.
What initially inspired you to make music?
PATRIK>I was pre-ordained to make musik. I can’t help myself. “Long agos never die when you’ve been pre-ordained to fly…”
What is your favourite venue to play at?
PATRIK> Once upon a Time it Was Release The Bats. Now having been on tour & soon again to be constantly touring where I’ll most likely die onstage, I love performing everywhere within the Universe.
What artists/Musicians inspire you most?
PATRIK> David Bowie, Kraftwerk, Robert Johnson, The Stooges, Diamanda Galas, Salvador Dali, Robert Moog, Martin Atkins, Dylan circa 1965-1967 (only), The DaDaists, Black Sabbath, Sherry Rubber hardcore, Discharge, PTV, Joy Division, Killing Joke, Ladytron, among many fathoms ov more.
If you could go back in time, is there anything you’d choose to do differently?
PATRIK> Too many things but what good is it to have regrets? Complaining doesn’t change anything either. But I do wish that I had had my own recording studio as I do at this precise moment. Then I would & could have released thousands ov recordings ov many ilk & personal particular genres. Nowadays, when I receive an original idea, I just go into my studio & begin laying them down. Easily. It’s fucked up when you have to wait on somebody to enter into a studio paying them up to $150 an hour just to be creative. Or wait for a record label to release your musik while you almost die from severe anxiety holding onto fresh ideas. Now I’m doing it all myself, completely D.I.Y. It doesn’t get more “DIY” than Kommunity FK.
Why did the chicken cross the road?
PATRIK> To become enlightened.
Do you have any advice for someone who’d like to start their own band?
PATRIK> Procure your own home recording studio interface & applications, learn how to not know what you’re doing musically, & just go for it. Ignore following “The Rules” & use your own instinct instead. “Don’t follow, Lead.” Get me? You don’t need anybody else to create your own musik anymore. You don’t even need any other band members who don’t give a fuck about your vision, & most likely in the End, just want to use you for their own alternative agendas, to even perform live. Trust in this philosophy & process. Be fucking brave.
What has been your biggest challenge in the music industry?
PATRIK> For itself to stay alive. The so-called “Industry” is dying. They didn’t get artistes such as myself/Kommunity FK among other similar artistes. This is also why if you look around you that all or most popular bands these days SUCK. I’m referring to those being uber-hyped down our throats everywhere. I could have designed a WAY better soundtrack to any ov these new “vampire” films. A lot ov other great artistes & similar bands could have done as well. My challenges now are just working with a professional distributor for Kommunity FK musik & products. Tour support rarely exists anymore either so if it does, please grace me with that as well, then I’m a lucky cunt. R.I.P. The Record Industry.
What would be your weapon of choice against a zombie apocalypse?
PATRIK> The Republican Party & certain personages whom have stabbed me in the back. Just throw them all in while we make our escape out the back door into a black Maria limousine.
Vinyl, tape or CD? Why?
PATRIK> Vinyl. Your receive 100% sonic quality on vinyl recordings, if the artist has any talent whatsoever then you’ll cherish the record cover artwork for years to come, & they last forever in a varied genre collection. It’s awesome to sometimes pull out any vinyl record & just hold the cover in your hands gazing at the cover front to back while you listen to it. It makes the soundtrack to your precise moment every moment.
Are there any stories you’d like to share from touring?
PATRIK>We’ve had the pleasures ov many killer hotel rooms this last recent tour. Both Sherry Rubber & myself love touring & look forward to it for many years to come with blessings. Some ov the promoters were just great & gave us total respect. In a few cities some band members from particular opening acts wanted to leave their own bands just to join us! I found that a bit much as we don’t need any other musicians anymore. I’m afraid that I can’t share too much as some very personal events occurred on The Road that must remain a secret.
What helps relax you when the stress gets too high?
PATRIK> Hot sex with Sherry Rubber & a glass of excellent red wine with dinner. I don’t indulge anymore as I have exhausted that arena years ago. I don’t need drugs either just to relax. They wear off!
What inspires you?
PATRIK>Books. Films that I’ve discovered by chance, breathing in the fresh air right after it has rained, the innocence & naiveté of all animals, the constant bludgeoning from the “media” ov the oncoming Apocalypse & Armageddon, all good & bad things.
Any last words?
PATRIK> Please see that my grave is kept clean. Leave me some dead flowers. Remember to watch & listen to KOMMUNITY FK, 21st Century Amerikan Deathrock.
